March Madness, Sadness, or Gladness?

Dave Allen
President, AGRI-SEARCH

March Madness, to those of us who love college basketball, is something we look forward to every year.  However, this year’s March Madness has not been about basketball, but instead about a virus that has impacted every single one of us.  Just how it impacts us depends much upon our attitude.  Do we allow the stay at home, social distancing guidelines to lead us into a state of sadness and despair or to a mindset of gladness and new opportunity?

Growing up working on our neighbor’s farm, I enjoyed those long days of social distancing on the tractor running a field cultivator, chisel or moldboard plow.  It was a time to think, dream and ponder.  I also learned very early in life that it takes a lot of faith to plant seeds in the ground and believe in a few months something good would be there to harvest or eat.

We are at a unique time in history.  Many of us now have unexpected time to think and dream.  Although in our businesses, jobs, and families, March Madness 2020 has not necessarily been something to cheer about, it has offered us some unforeseen opportunities to plant seeds of hope and encouragement.  We can care for our neighbors or co-workers with acts of kindness or connect with family, friends or neighbors we may have lost track of or been too busy just a month ago to think or care about.  It’s also a great time to sit back and simply ponder just what Psalm 46:10 means, to "Be still and know that I am God; I will be exalted among the nations, I will be exalted in the earth."

Our agriculture industry knows all about using resilience, faith, and hope to deal with the unknown; it’s an annual event.  We know what it means to be uncomfortable as we wait upon a much-needed rain or market prices to improve. After all, we just came through 2019…and several challenging years before that. We know that living with faith in an eternal God gives us hope that those seeds we plant, literally and figuratively, will flourish and that every season of madness will ultimately turn into gladness.  Our painful memories from the difficulties of years gone by fuel our hope for a better tomorrow.  We know each new year brings new hope and new opportunity, even when the viruses of life constantly attack us.

As you deal with the discomfort of the world around us, embrace it. Look for ways to impact your sphere of influence in a positive way.  Also, take time to read "Become Comfortable with the Uncomfortable" elsewhere in this newsletter.  And don’t forget…Easter is coming! Christ is risen!  We indeed have reason to be filled with gladness.

Sometimes becoming comfortable with the uncomfortable stuff in life is easier said than done. When my youngest daughter arrived three years ago, my husband and I decided I would stay home with her for as long as I could, and that I would work from home. It was during this time that I embraced my passion for working with children. I became the Children’s Ministry Leader at our church, and soon after that I began volunteering with middle school youth group on Monday nights. Everything was working out and we were comfortable with the routine we had established.

In October of 2019, I found out about the Office Manager position at AGRI-SEARCH. After a lot of thought and prayer, my husband and I decided that I would go back to work outside of the home. It was a scary decision, knowing our youngest daughter was still small, and knowing I didn’t want to give up my role at church.

It’s easy to underestimate ourselves, fear change, and get too comfortable in life that we never take the leap and step out of our comfort zone, which is how life was going for me. I had become comfortable with my routine.

It took some time to get used to the major changes, and there are always going to be imperfect days, but I took a leap of faith and decided I was going to go to work and also continue to serve the next generation. We can’t be afraid of the potential of the future. We can’t be afraid to step out of our comfort zones. We can’t fear becoming comfortable with the uncomfortable. We might surprise ourselves.

Become Comfortable with the Uncomfortable

"No matter your role or how long you have been in it, we all have situations we would rather avoid. Scenarios can range from taking on a project in which you are not sure you will excel, having a difficult conversation with a client or colleague, or even simply interacting with coworkers in a social setting outside of the workplace. No matter the situation, most would agree that leaving your comfort zone can create the opportunity to flourish professionally, personally, and financially. Yet that comfort zone can be a cozy blanket of security quite difficult to shed! So how do you become comfortable with the uncomfortable?
