Bringing Inspiration and Joy to the Workplace

We live in a culture desperate for positive role models.  Too many people are going through the motions and not fulfilling their God-given purpose.

So, what is it that motivates you?  What inspires you?  What is your purpose, the reason you do what you do?  Are you a leader passionate about building a team motivated to win, or are you burned out and going through the motions?  Are you a team member who is inspired to perform at a high level, or are you unchallenged and not excited to show up every day?

In our culture, we like to point blame.  Our troubles, our lack of success, or our reasons for any failure are all easily blamed on someone else.  But for the real reason, we often need to simply look in the mirror.  There we will always find opportunity for growth, improvement, attitude adjustment, and kicking the “poor me’s” right out the door.

Dave Allen
President, AGRI-SEARCH

Have you identified your “why”?  It starts with identifying what is deep within your soul, what it is that makes you tick.  It might be taking care of your family, your desire to help support someone in need, your dream to retire with financial stability, or a deeply held belief.  Typically, it is a combination of several things within us that keep us moving forward.

Sometimes when the road gets tough, we forget our “why.”  We get frustrated, discouraged, or depressed, and those negative attitudes can spread like wildfire to the people around us and create even more turmoil, but it does not have to be that way.

Make up your mind today to pursue positive dreams and goals in your life, to make a positive difference in the lives of others. Treat every person in your path in a positive way…the way they want to be treated.

Then, read "Desire to Inspire", an excellent article found elsewhere in this newsletter.  It will motivate and inspire you to a higher quality of living and leading, to live each day with joy, and to treat people with kindness and respect.

Making a Long-Lasting Positive First Impression
By Chelbi Williams Alt

A first impression is how you present yourself and that can be in your writing (résumé), the way you speak (phone interviews), or the way you carry yourself in a face-to-face meeting (in-person interviews). When searching for candidates, we don’t always get to meet them face-to-face and sometimes we never get to the phone interview if a résumé doesn’t align with our clients’ needs.

Your résumé, or even your LinkedIn profile, is your personal billboard. You use this form of communication to leave the reader wanting to know more and to get to the next step in the process, the phone call. The phone call is your opportunity to tell your story in more detail where you let the other person know what your interests and skills are and how you would be an asset to their team. But first, there is the résumé.

I love reading résumés; trust me, I understand this is not usually an exciting topic at dinner parties, but it truly is something I enjoy doing. The thought process behind a résumé is intriguing to me as it is the tiniest window to meet a new person.

"Why did they think this skill was important to add?"

"I wonder if they can also do X, Y, Z?"

Before you apply for that next opportunity or your dream job, ask yourself what impression your résumé is going to make on the reader and if it is going to get you to the next step in the interviewing process.

As the saying goes, "You never get a second chance to make a first impression."

Desire to Inspire

Motivate and inspire. These two words are often used interchangeably, echoed perpetually in the minds of any leader trying to spearhead the charge. However, view the two as the same and you are missing a critical component in your growth as a senior executive. Why? Motivation is of the ego, while inspiration is of the soul. Knowing how to motivate can make you a phenomenal boss, while knowing how to inspire will solidify your future as a phenomenal leader.

Motivation is when you get hold of an idea and carry it through to its conclusion, and inspiration is when an idea gets hold of you and carries you where you are intended to go.”
– Dr Wayne Dyer

Being inspirational can be a trait that appears to be intangible; you either have it or you don’t. It seems that individuals like Winston Churchill, JFK, Ronald Reagan, and Tony Robbins were most certainly born as charismatic and influential individuals. So, if being inspirational to others is something we all want, but it’s something you are and not something you get, then inspiration must be impossible to teach, right?  Not quite.
