Keeping the Right People on the Bus

Dave Allen
President, AGRI-SEARCH

In our office, we have a team member fond of saying, "There is a seat for everybody and a body for every seat."  But what happens when the wrong person is in a seat?

I remember well a client’s call.  "Dave, you’ve helped us find some quality people.  Would you consider helping us move one on to a new opportunity?" Though the call was a first for me, and thankfully it wasn’t a person we had placed, the problem the employer was facing is all too common in the work place.

As a manager, he liked the employee who had been there for some time.  He had allowed average behavior to decline into sub-par production that he was finding no longer acceptable.  The employee’s personal situation was one that the client preferred not to be responsible for disrupting.  So, what does he do?  He calls us to see if we would help with his problem.

At AGRI-SEARCH, we specialize in finding top-level talent, and what he described was not.  So, what should we tell him to do?  To find out, read "Loss Aversion", an excellent article found in this newsletter on dealing with perpetual underperformers.

Meet Nate Witsman

Nate Witsman joined the AGRI-SEARCH team in early 2018 after spending 13 years recruiting with other firms. He brings to work every day a passion for recruiting and helping match quality talent with our client companies.

His focus at AGRI-SEARCH is partnering with Agricultural Processing and Handling Equipment Manufacturers and related companies to recruit leading Engineering and Automation talent.

Nate is a Charleston, Illinois, native and earned his Bachelor’s degree in 2003 from Eastern Illinois University in Charleston.  Soon after graduating from college, he headed to the northwest Chicago suburbs where he began his recruiting career working for a large recruiting firm and dealing with a wide variety of positions.

In 2008, Nate moved back to central Illinois, and after working independently for a time, joined an MRI Network affiliate in their Bloomington office.  He worked there for seven years specializing in mid- to executive-level Engineering and Sales professionals with equipment manufacturers and system integrators around the U.S.

Nate enjoys using his many years of recruiting experience to help expand AGRI-SEARCH’s ability to serve clients and candidates in the agricultural industry.  He is also passionate about his faith and family, and when not working, he is an avid woodworker and fly fisherman.

Please contact Nate to discuss your needs, whether looking for a career opportunity or needing to hire quality talent in the Engineering and Automation space.

Loss Aversion

Imagine this scenario: a colleague offers to flip a coin and give you $20 if it lands on heads. If it lands on tails, you give him $20. Stop and ponder; would you accept that bet? For most of us, the answer is no. Behavioral science experts Amos Tversky and Daniel Kahneman performed an experiment which resulted in a clear example of human bias towards losses. The experiment involved asking people if they would accept a bet based on the flip of a coin. If the coin came up tails the person would lose $100, and if it came up heads they would win $200. The results of the experiment showed that on average people needed to gain about twice as much as they were willing to lose in order to proceed forward with the bet. This tendency reflects loss aversion, or the idea that losses generally have a much larger psychological impact than gains of the same size.
