Are You Who You Want
People to Think You Are?

Dave Allen
President, AGRI-SEARCH

When you die, what would those closest to you inscribe on your tombstone or say at your funeral? Would it accurately reflect what you think about yourself and what you want others to think about you?

Think of the people who are your role models, those you really appreciate and trust. Fortunately, in the agricultural industry, there are a lot of quality people from which "what you see is what you get."  But that said, no matter the person, it is our human nature to want to hide our warts. We often try to hide our weaknesses, our struggles, and all the things we think may shed some not so positive light upon us.  Social media is a great example.  It is full of "feel good" stories that almost always show the brighter and better side of life…not necessarily the realities of life.

How about at work? Are you real day-in and day-out in your communications and your actions?  Do people know they can trust what you say and that you have their best interests in mind?  Are you willing to step out on a limb even though it may expose some of your own weaknesses?

Today, authenticity in our "perfection driven" world is in greater demand than ever.  Challenge yourself to be "yourself."  Be more transparent, more genuine, and more real. Take off the makeup.  You’ll feel better and more energized when you stop trying to be someone or something you are not.  For additional insight, read "An Era of Authenticity" found elsewhere in this newsletter.

An Era of Authenticity

The topic of authenticity is likely often discussed in counseling sessions but rarely discussed related to the workplace. However, we live in an era where social media has perpetuated the need to showcase an idyllic life, in a time where a news story breaks every few minutes that erodes the reputation of highly powerful individuals we once trusted, and in a day and age where old friends want to reconnect ultimately to try to get you in their downline of their newest MLM.

It is fair to say that most people have a heightened sense of skepticism. It is also fair to say that in the face of that skepticism, most people crave an era of authenticity more than ever before. This is not limited to life outside of the workplace; many articles have been written about the importance of the boss-employee relationship and how the lack thereof is one of the largest factors to turnover within an organization.
