Confidence Must be Carefully Cultivated

Dave Allen
President, AGRI-SEARCH

As a grade school student, I always knew where to go when our teacher sorted our class by height preparing for class pictures.  As the shortest, skinniest kid in the class, it was a no brainer.  Advancing into high school, nothing changed.  Approaching age 16, when I got my license permit, it read 5’4" and 105 pounds.  Thankfully, our school did not have football!

Looking back, fear was a constant.  In those days, freshmen getting stuffed in lockers was fairly common.  I dreaded wrestling in PE.  Meeting certain seniors in the hall made me quiver.  Even guarding opponents nearly a foot taller on the basketball floor created special challenges.  So how does one overcome their deficiencies?  By finding what you are good at and becoming the best YOU can be.

I loved gardening and dreamed of farming, although my dad was a truck driver with no land.  I began walking beans at nine, and one day when I was 12, our neighbor asked me to help him farm.  It was a day that changed my life.  That very first day, they put a pop case on the floor for me to stand on to handle the 4620 John Deere and chisel plow because I couldn’t reach the peddles.  They trusted me.  My confidence grew, I took pride in all my farm work, and my passion for agriculture has never diminished.  I found what I loved, grew in my confidence, and overcame a lot of mistakes along the way in building a rewarding career.

Does your workplace create a climate that builds confidence in rookies and veterans alike?  Does it allow for mistakes to be used as learning events that catapult team members to the next level of success and excellence? Read "A Culture of Confidence" elsewhere in this newsletter and begin transforming your culture into one that breeds confidence, not fear.

Jennifer’s Harvest Story

During my childhood (age 7 to 12), my dad managed a 2,000 row-crop farm in Elsberry, Missouri, in the Mississippi River bottoms.  I enjoyed growing up on this farm in particular as it had a half-mile lane to our house full of pecan trees as well ample room to ride my 3-wheeler, play with our dog, etc.  Our house was just above the top of the levee and was about 20 yards from the River. The levee made for great winter sledding.

One harvest Dad’s combine wasn’t working correctly; the head was dropping full ears of corn.  Dad said he’d give me a nickel (this was in the early 80’s) for every ear I picked up from the field.  He thought I’d pick up a few ears along the edge of the field and quit…. he was wrong. With Mom’s help, we made several piles throughout multiple fields.  We didn’t cover all of the corn fields, but Mom remembers Dad grumbling about how much he had to pay me.  No one remembers exactly what that amount was, but I made out like a bandit that fall.

A Culture of Confidence

Turns out, there are benefits that come from being a cocky teenager. Although your parents might have been counting down the days until you flew the nest, that swagger means you’ll likely end up earning a higher salary than those of your more modest friends. According to the Journal of Economic Psychology, their "Self-Esteem and Earnings" study showed that your level of confidence is at least as important as how smart you are when it comes to how much money you end up making. In fact, self-esteem can affect salary as much as cognitive ability.
